Choosing School Areas

Recently, someone wrote in asking me to recommend the best public schools in Toronto. I’m afraid that isn’t an easy question to answer since it depends on a number of factors.

For instance, schools in more affluent areas often have better supplies and facilities because their parents can afford to contribute more to help supplement their children’s education.Often, schools in inner city poorer areas have excellent teachers who choose to improve their students’  lives by providing a superior education.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that the schools themselves can be wonderful, no matter where they are. An area may have students who come to school wanting to learn, or the students might be more focused on where their next meal is coming from, or difficulties because of language issues.

Parental involvement also plays a big part in the school system. Do the parents value education, or do they send their children just because they have to?

As you can see,  answering “where are the best schools” isn’t something I can do with a detailed list of names. Some schools excel in arts programs, some in technical, still others in sports. We used to think that schools offering French Immersion were a little better because of the extra funding provided for that program. I’m not sure if that’s true or not.

Unless the rules have changed, students usually have to attend the school in their area. Otherwise, if a school was thought to be better, everyone would want to be sending their kids to it.

My advice would be to check out the schools yourself in the neighbourhood that you are considering. Notice how the students are dressed, their behavior, and the general atmosphere of the school. Notice the teachers too – how do they interact with their students? Do they seem to genuinely enjoy teaching?

The most important thing for school success is the encouragement and involvement in the home. Successful people have risen from many a bad area because they had the support and love of a parent. All the best in your search.
