House Break-ins

One of the dangers of living in Canada, is the possiblity that your house could be broken into. My uncle, who lived in Toronto, never bothered to lock his door because he figured if someone wanted to break-in they would smash the door anyway, so why bother. I don’t think that’s such a good idea, and we always lock our doors, especially at night.

A number of years ago, we were getting ready to visit relatives in another city. As we packed the car, we noticed two men strolling by our house and glancing at us as they walked by. We didn’t think anything of it and drove away.

After stopping for gas, we realized it was getting late and we should go home and phone the relatives to let them know we were still coming. When we arrived back at our house, after being away 15 minutes at the most, our house had been broken into and robbed.

In that short time, those two men (who were later caught) had smashed the lock, overturned drawers, threw the mattress off the bed, and taken anything of value they could carry – mainly our sons’ game system and some other electronics.

Even though not much was taken, I felt defiled and unsafe. It’s too bad that there are always people who find it easier to hurt others than to help themselves.
