Multiple Choice Exams

My son-in-law is going to college this year to be a gas fitter (involves fixing gas furnaces). He has been out of school for some time and had to write his first big exam.

The exam was three hours long and was multiple choice, meaning there was a question and the answer was one of three possibilities: A, B, or C. You had to circle the correct answer.

Sounds like a fairly easy test right? If you studied and knew your stuff, there should be no difficulty passing.

The problem was that one sheet of paper had questions and another sheet had only the question number and the letters A, B, and C. If you happened to miss a line and get out of sequence with the question sheet, you were in trouble.

Which was exactly what happened. Son-in-law missed one line of answers and the entire rest of the exam answers didn’t line up with the right questions. He noticed it not long before the exam ended and had to frantically look for the spot he skipped over and re-do his answers. Stressful, to say the least.

He did pass, but others in the class were not so lucky. When you know your work and fail because you skipped a line of answers, it’s a hard lesson. No doubt, the next exam will be written much more carefully.
