The History Behind the Love of Hockey for Canadians

Although hockey originated from Europe, it was a Canadian named J. G. Creighton who first came up with the rules for the modern game of ice hockey we all know today. The first game played was in Montreal in the year 1875.

Hockey then found it’s way to the United States in the year 1893. By the early 1900′s all of Europe was found to be enjoying the game. Although it was the Americans who started the National Hockey League after the first World War, hockey has still been considered one of Canada’s greatest creations.

Over the years some rules have changed, and the game has now become more commercialized. Whereas once the great players had a meager salary of $15,000 which they didn’t mind because they loved the game, now players are threatening to leave if they do not get multi millions of dollars to play.

True Canadians who have always loved the sport, look back with fondness on the many greats who have come from this proud country. Our country boasts many top skilled players and in Toronto, hockey fans can visit the Hockey Hall of Fame to read all the facts of their favorite players who have had the honor of being inducted into the Hall.

Not only are we known for NHL hockey legends, but Canadian women have also taken their places beside the men in ranking with the best skills and abilities. Although not as popular or widely received as the NHL, women’s hockey has been around since the 1890′s, gaining more popularity  as they expanded into the Olympic sports events. Earning recognition for winning 8 straight world titles up to 2005, women’s hockey is put on the world’s map.

Hockey will remain a cherished sport among Canadians for many years to come. For those dedicated Maple Leaf fans who have been waiting for 40 years to bring the Stanley Cup back to home ground, the game of hockey lives on in the hearts of all.
