Summer Weather

Weather here in Ontario is totally up and down this time of year. One day it will be so hot you can’t stand to be outside and the next day you will need a warm sweater.

Not only does the temperature flutuate from day to day, but from hour to hour. Mornings and evenings might be sweater weather and during the day it’s very warm. Or the heat could continue into the night.

As for rain, we go days with dry weather, then it will pour for maybe an hour, then be hot again. Other times it will pour every night.

Canadians are known for being prepared for all kinds of weather and now you know the reason. Even checking the weather channel doesn’t always help – they seem to change their forecast by the minute. The best thing to do is have a sweater ready, dress for heat and don’t forget your hat!

Training Courses

Ontario has many private schools that offer training in a number of occupations, from business to dental to social work and everything in between. Fees are often much higher than those for the local colleges, but admission may be a little easier.

If you decide to attend one of these private schools, a word of caution – make sure that the course you want is accredited. A friend of mine spent many hours and a lot of money taking a social worker course, only to find that it wasn’t recognized. He was still hired, but at a much smaller wage.

There were also a number of students who graduated from a dental college and were unable to find work in their field because the school was not recognized.

Is There Really Gold on the Streets in Canada?

A friend of mine who recently came to Canada expected to see streets full of money, but no matter how hard she looked, there were only a few pennies and nickles. By searching diligently she might have been able to find dimes and quarters, but rarely enough to even buy a coffee at the end of the day. I’m afraid that finding money on Canada’s streets is a myth.

The reality is that if you were to find a lot of change, it might be hard to convert it into paper money. Most stores don’t want a lot of small coins, so what do you do? Try taking a lot of pennies to the local bank and they want you to have a bank account before they will accept them.

You may not find money on the streets, but rarely will you find trash thrown down either – and to me, that’s worth treasuring.
