Countdown to the CNE

Every year, for the last two weeks of August and ending Labour Day weekend, Toronto is host to the Canadian National Exhibition. It signals the end of summer and if you happen to be a native Torontonian, it’s in your blood. I can count on one hand the number of years I have missed attending.

While the CNE isn’t as enjoyable as I remember it being when I was a kid, it’s still worth going to. Admission prices are very reasonable and include access to buildings full of things to see and a variety of shows – from talent shows, to bands, to animals.

There is an extra charge for the rides and games in the amusement park areas, but you can have a full day of fun without going anywhere near them.

The shopping is great, with items from all over the world, and food to satisfy every taste.

The “ex” begins this Friday, so plan to get there early and stay all day. Wear comfortable walking shoes and have fun. I’m looking forward to it!

Highland Games

Recently I was asked to help out with the annual Highland Games here in Cambridge. An all day event, the Games were a celebration of everything Scottish. There were Scottish dancing competitions, booths full of interesting food and drink, sheep shearing, and tests of strength – everything from a tug-of-war, where teams pulled on a rope from opposite ends, to lifting and throwing large logs. The athletes showed almost superhuman strength, especially since it was a very hot day.

The highlight of the Highland Games was, of course, the bagpipes. To some, their music may sound a little unusual, but to those of us with any Scottish blood, bagpipes are heavenly music. Bands traveled from all over Ontario and parts of the United States to compete at the games. The bands each had their own colour of kilts (the skirt-like outfits that even the men wear) and paraded into the grounds playing the bagpipes, drums, and cymbals. It was an awesome sight.

Many small towns in Canada hold Highland Games, so plan to attend and take your camera with you.
