Welcoming Fall to Ontario

Fall, otherwise known as autumn, has come to southern Ontario. The leaves on many of the trees are turning beautiful shades of red and orange. Standing beside the evergreens, they create an amazing canvas of colour. Imagine a forest of red, orange, and green stretching across the landscape. People love to drive in the country this time of year, just to see the changing colours. It’s a photographer’s dream.

The air is cool and crisp both mornings and evenings – jacket weather for sure. Then in the afternoon, the sun often makes it feel almost like a summer day. It’s best to dress in layers when going outside this time of year. Then you can be prepared for those changes in temperature.

Fall even smells different. It’s a smell I can’t describe and always reminds me of our camping trips. Maybe it’s the odor of fireplaces and the crisp, clean air that bring images of campfires and tents in the woods.

I complain about the heat during the summer and the cold in the winter. But autumn in Ontario is just about perfect.

Chalk Lake Ontario

Ontario has some beautiful lakes. One of them is called Chalk Lake. A small lake, no motor boats are allowed. Those who live or cottage on the lake benefit by having less noise and a clearer, cleaner lake – perfect for swimming and canoeing. This is the view from my sister’s home – the lucky lady.

Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto

It’s hard to believe summer is just about over. In Ontario, the signal for end of summer and back to school is the opening of the Canadian National Exhibition. For two weeks, this yearly fair runs every day and attracts people from all over the world.

Being a native Torontonian, the “ex” as we call it, is in my blood. I think there are only a couple of years that I couldn’t attend. Even though I miss a lot that the fair had to offer when I was younger – like the many free food samples – there is always a lot to see and do.

Rides and games on the midway will cost you extra money, but the rest of the buildings and shows are usually free once you pay their reasonable admission fee. Go with extra in your pocket though, for food and specialty purchases. There are exhibits indoors and out, so dress accordingly.

Admission to Ontario Place is also included, so you need to either spend a whole day and wear good walking shoes or attend more than once. Every day has special events, ending with the air show on Labour Day weekend. When I was a teenager, I went to the ex every day one year and never got bored with it.

From animals, to rides, to games, to shows and other things to see – the ex is an exciting place to visit. Next August, plan to make it part of your Toronto adventure.
