Disney on Ice

This past weekend, I attended Disney on Ice at the Rogers Centre (Skydome) with my 4 year old grandson. The show was two hours long, with a brief intermission half way. Toward the end, he was starting to get restless, but enjoyed most of it. The “Cars” sequence was his favorite and was right at the beginning. We wished that part had been longer, but each of the acts was a little bit longer than the one before. Other than “Cars” and “Lion King” it seemed that the program was geared a little more toward the girls, with a lot of princesses and fairies.

Overall, it was a nice afternoon. Grandson was impressed by all the colours and spectacular lighting and costumes. And of course, he wanted their pricey souvenirs of the event. (Having two grandmothers and mom with him ensured at least some little trinket).

Tips when you attend:

  • try to get there quite a bit before the show begins. We were attempting to find our seats five minutes ahead and had to wait for a long line of other people to sit down first.
  • Note that food is expensive and lines are long. Best to eat before you get to the show.
  • Washrooms at break time are unbelievably hard to get to. Take a bathroom trip before you go to your seat instead. We had a baby with us as well and used the washroom for her during the show while everyone else were in their seats.
  • Souvenirs are in the $20 range, although I think there was a colouring book at $5. If you don’t intend to make any purchases, tell your children ahead of time. Otherwise, you will be plagued with tears and pleading as you pass the many booths that are set up.
  • We had less expensive seats in the middle of the stadium and were able to see the whole show without any difficulty. Don’t feel that you have to be right at the front.

Disney on Ice appeals to most people, especially children and those who enjoy figure skating. If you have the chance, make it one of your family events. Here’s a video that highlights many of the features of the show.

Chicken Straight From the Farm

My son-in-law’s parents have a small hobby farm outside town, and we often benefit from the beef, the eggs, or the chickens. This time it was a chicken. Not your average little chicken, mind you. No, this was the size of a small turkey. There were other differences as well. The fat was a deeper yellow colour, the meat a little darker, and the taste just a little stronger. For a city girl like me, it took some getting used to. But once I got past the different look, the taste was still yummy chicken.

Maple Syrup Festivals

From early March until the second week of April, different locations throughout southern Ontario are hosting Maple Syrup Festivals. These special events often include horse drawn wagon rides, taffy making, and lots of pancakes and maple syrup to eat. The high point of the day is your tour through the tall sugar bush, where you watch the trees being tapped and see the methods used to collect their sap.

Here is a link to a number of the maple syrup events, including dates and prices. Have fun and let me know how you enjoyed it!
